I remember having an interesting conversation with a fellow artist I know (I won't mention his name though.. haha) he told me something that's common yet overlooked. He said "Do you know the one thing that triumphs over talent everyday" I pondered for a while and said persistence, he replied back with a smile on his face knowing I was so far from the answer "No my friend. Its content!"
It didn't make sense at first until I put it into context, that is from a musical perspective; you might be the most talented person on the planet but if you are not producing or making your work available to your audience then you won't go far.
That's probably what kills other artists careers too; an inability to churn out great hits or supply your audience with content at a consistent basis. I think the least an establishing artist should have is two songs a year and for an established one, it should be at least one every two to three months.
Look at Biggie Small, he was very talented but as a solo artist he didn't get the chance to produce a lot of music as opposed to Tupac Shakur who every waking minute was either writing or recording music. Some say Biggie's talent and word play out-shined Tupac's, while others say Tupac's creativity and large body of work trumped Biggie's.
However one thing is clear about these two heavyweights, as an artist you always have to keep creating or end up a one hit wonder!
