Imagie Dei

After a year-long self imposed hiatus Defmatic, considered one of the illest and most gifted emcee of the 21st century, returns to the scene with a solid EP (extended play) titled Imagie Dei or I.D in short.

Coming together as a carefully packaged ode to the art of Hip Hop and bringing together all of his best studio recordings (with a few pleasant surprises), I.D touches on various aspects of life from a man in introspection, to just having fun while simultaneously oozing raw witty talent.

Opening the EP is the poetic introduction titled Imagie, a collaborative effort with rapper Nes, which sets off a back and forth conversational tone for the listeners, preparing them for a whirl wind of different emotions, topics and themes they will encounter in the subsequent songs.

The second song I don’t even care raises the tempo of the project by fusing rock and rap instrumentals, where Defmatic tackles various issues confounding society while taking a brash uncaring persona in the process with lines like “I gatta spit this like it’s the last, grade A future I’m about to laugh”or “fanta bounced up, coca cola bottle crack a skull up, open happiness for all y’all gremlins ur styles wack..” which demonstrates an emcee at war with not only his perceived foes but his own self imposed rhyme scheme.

Shifting the mood is That New New returning the listener to a more familiar good vibe rhythm with a catchy chorus that would get anyone singing along to the lyrics. And just when you think the good times have ended, track four South B City reminds you why it’s not yet time to sit down and catch a break.

Coincidentally, both songs appear to portray a common feature of hiding complex themes and perspectives while utilizing a syncopated delivery within simple beats.

On the fifth track Uta Do, we see Defmatic teaming up again with the talented femcee Nes in a heavy hitting no holds bar lyrical tsunami as they remind everyone that they are nothing to play with. So good is this song that it naturally cuts across rap sub-genres with ease having enough bars for the old heads while quenching the new generation’s appetite for heavy bass, kicks and high pinched snares. Although a sample of a previous artist’s beats (gillie the kid), the duo does justice to the instrumentals and unexpectedly surpass the original artist’s effort.

Following up at number six is Now by DefNes which solidifies their defiance as they cement their collaboration into a quasi rap superman and wonder woman lyrical tag team. This song from flow to delivery perfectly captures the essence of the EP by making a bold statement that the duo has arrived, and that the time is now!

The project finally closes with Change Murmur a self exploration into the beliefs, fears, castigation's and hopes of a young emcee coming to term with his own limitations like the proverbial lyrical return of a prodigal son when he proclaims “I’m new to the game but I spit like I grew old in the fame”.
